WHY STUDENTS FAIL IN ENGLISH (PRECIS
& COMPREHENSION) IN CSS
Dear students,
Every year about 10,000 students appear in
CSS exams but almost 75-80 % students fail in English (Précis & Comprehension). Most of them prepare
hard for the exams but being unaware of the expectations of the examiner,
unknowingly commit some common mistakes, which lead to their failure.
I strongly believe, if students know about
these common mistakes and work on their grey areas, they can easy get through
the English (Précis & Comprehension) paper.
For this, I would like to quote the remarks
and observations of FPSC examiners on the performance of CSS students in
English (Précis and Comprehension). I hope this will help the students
The Examiners have made the following
observations on the candidates' performance on English (PrĂ©cis & Composition):” The PrĂ©cis writing
ability of the candidates was poor. Some basic mistakes related to not writing
in third person or past tense, capitalization, punctuations and spellings. A
significant majority did not have the command over syntax, phraseology or
etymology of words. There were also issues of first language interference.
About 8894 (92%) candidates could not pass the said paper. The Examiner
underlined that it was imperative to communicate to the institutions of higher
education to take appropriate measures to enhance English language proficiency
at the graduate level. “
So, what are these common grey areas where
students make mistakes?
1.
Punctuation
and capitalization
2.
Spellings
3.
English
Syntax
4.
The art of
paraphrasing
5.
Vocabulary
