A STEP BY STEP GUIDANCE FOR CSS ASPIRANTS TO WRITE A GOOD PRECIS

Write a Précis of the following passage.

Prevention is better than cure. It is recognized that the only way to get rid of malaria completely is o get rid of the mosquitoes which cause it. Malaria is always associated with damp and marshy land. This is not because the land is damp, but because the static water is the breeding place of the mosquitoes, which begin their life as a larva in the water. Malaria does not frequently occur in dry desert countries because mosquitoes cannot breed there. The only way to destroy mosquitoes is to prevent their breeding in static water. Draining all ponds and pools can do this. And by keeping them covered in the breeding season with a film of kerosene oil, which by depriving the larva of air kills them.

stage 1:
read the passage thrice and pick important points in the passage:

Important Points: ( Write points in your own words)

·  Prevention is better than cure.
·  Mosquitoes cause malaria.
·  We should get rid of malaria.
·  The static water is the breeding place of mosquitoes.
·  If the land is dry, the mosquitoes will not breed there.
·  WE should destroy the mosquitoes by draining all ponds and pools.
·   Another way to destroy the mosquitoes is to cover the ponds and the pools with a    layer of    kerosene oil.
·The larvas get air and ultimately die.

Stage 2 : write a rough draft
Rough Draft
malaria is caused by mosquitoes. They breeds on the stagnant water .They do not breed on dry place.if we want to get rid of malaria we should drain the standing water or use kerosine  oil layer to destroy the larva.

Stage 3: write a final draft

1.The first sentence is written in passive .It needed to be converted to active voice.
2. The second sentence is connected with the first  by using commas.
3. breeds to converte to breed (A grammatical mistake).
4. important details is added
5.  A proper title is given

Mosquitoes cause Malaria

Mosquitoes, which cause Malaria, breed in stagnant water. They cannot breed in dry lands. If we use kerosene, the stagnant water is covered with a layer of kerosene, the larva will die. By doing so, we could prevent the spreading of malaria.

WAYS TO IMPROVE ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION

WAYS TO IMPROVE ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION 1. Learn to listen. Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen. Some sounds can be hard to tell apart when you’re listening. Did the speaker  sleep  or  slip ? Did he hurt his  chin  or his  shin ? If you can hear the difference, it will be easier to speak the difference. The better you get at hearing words, the better you will become at pronouncing them. 2. Notice how your mouth and lips move. When you speak, you move your mouth.  How  you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word. The first step to correcting your mouth shape is to notice it and pay attention. There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape: ·        Use a mirror.  This is by far the simplest way to tell what your mouth is doing while you talk. ·        Put a finger in front of your lips (like you’re saying “shh”).  As you speak, don’t move your finger. You should feel your lips moving away fr

CREATIVE WRITING SERIES-LESSON 1:How to make your writing interesting?

How to make your writing interesting? The ideal English text is clear, concise and easy to understand. Even advanced level academic textbooks are written in plain English words. So when you write, try to keep your sentences clear and well structured so that your readers will have no difficulty understanding them. Don’t try to use complex sentence patterns with the sole objective of impressing the reader. Chances are they wouldn’t. Worse still, they might abandon your text before finishing it.  When writing in English, keep the following rules in mind: Use simple language. That doesn’t mean that you should only write short, simple sentences. Instead, use a variety of sentence patterns – some complex, some simple and some compound. Just make sure that your sentences are not ridiculously long.  Make your text interesting by using a wide variety of sentence patterns. For example, use participle clauses, relative clauses, prepositional clauses, infinitive constructions and if-cla

WHY STUDENTS FAIL IN ENGLISH (PRECIS & COMPREHENSION) IN CSS

WHY STUDENTS FAIL IN ENGLISH (PRECIS & COMPREHENSION) IN CSS Dear students, Every year about 10,000 students appear in CSS exams but almost 75-80 % students fail in English (Précis   & Comprehension). Most of them prepare hard for the exams but being unaware of the expectations of the examiner, unknowingly commit some common mistakes, which lead to their failure. I strongly believe, if students know about these common mistakes and work on their grey areas, they can easy get through the English (Précis & Comprehension) paper. For this, I would like to quote the remarks and observations of FPSC examiners on the performance of CSS students in English (Précis and Comprehension). I hope this will help the students The Examiners have made the following observations on the candidates' performance on English (Précis & Composition):” The Précis writing ability of the candidates was poor. Some basic mistakes related to not writing in third person or past tens
